3 Decades Ago, Trump Spent $100,000 On an Ad Criticizing The U.S… Here’s Why

Almost 30 years ago, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump spent money on an ad that railed against the United States. The ad said something he felt needed to be said then, and it is something he still says today.

The ad, which appeared like more of an open letter, was featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe on Sept. 2, 1987, and it’s pure Trump. According to Associated Press he spent $94,801 on the ad.

“There’s nothing wrong with America’s Foreign Defense Policy that a little backbone can’t cure,” the ad’s headline read.

The letter was addressed to the American people, and Trump explained why he believed America should stop paying to defend countries that could afford to defend themselves.

He accused Japan and other countries of taking advantage of the United States and asked why these nations weren’t paying the United States for “the human lives and billions of dollars we are losing to protect their interests.”

“The world is laughing at America’s politicians as we protect ships we don’t own, carrying oil we don’t need, destined for allies who won’t help,” the ad continued.

Trump added that American profits should help “our farmers, our sick, our homeless.”

“End our huge deficits, reduce our taxes, and let America’s economy grow unencumbered by the cost of defending those who can easily afford to pay us for the defense of their freedom,” he continued.

Trump concluded the ad by imploring the American people to “not let our great country be laughed at any more.”

Trump letter

Trump appeared on the Larry King show and expressed the same sentiments on the day the ad ran, telling King he was tired of watching other countries rip off the United States. He knew then America’s greatness was at risk and the country couldn’t sustain the billions of dollars we spend supporting other countries.

It’s hard to argue with that.

You catch that interview here:

This letter and interview demonstrate how Trump has always been concerned about American interests and how the government spends taxpayer money.
