The left’s default solution to any problem is to give more power to the federal government and this development should concern anyone that thinks the last thing this country needs is more big government intrusion.
Lifezette reported that President Obama’s Department of Justice is looking to nationalize local police departments.
From United Nations Rapporteur Maina Kai on July 27:
The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice has provided oversight and recommendations for improvement of police services in a number of cities with consent decrees. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce discrimination in law enforcement and it needs to be beefed up and increased to cover as many of the 18,000-plus local law enforcement jurisdictions.

This program is set to undo the Rudy Giuliani style policies that spread across the nation that were effective in reducing crime in big cities in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Federal regulations are put in place over local police departments with an appalling lack of oversight.
Lifezette describes in detail how the program works:
Here’s how it works: the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice files a lawsuit in federal court against a city, county, or state, alleging constitutional and civil rights violations by the police or at a corrections facility. It is done under 42 U.S.C. § 14141, a section of the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, granting the attorney general the power to prosecute law enforcement misconduct. The municipality then simply agrees to the judicial finding — without contest — and the result is a wide-reaching federal court order that imposes onerous regulations on local police.
These so-called “consent decrees” are in name only. The federal government steps in and strong arms local municipalities into bending to their will via a lawsuit.
This has already happened in Newark, NJ with the DOJ decided that they committed “constitutional violations,” because of “deficiencies in NPD’s systems” which, you guessed it, can be fixed by ceding control to the federal government who, according to them, knows best how to root out these so-called egregious violations.
Yes, because the federal government is known for its efficiency, and certainly those from on high know better than local police departments how to handle their business. Unbelievable.
According to Lifezette, they contacted congressional offices about the DOJ situation and they were unaware of the program yet these decrees have been in use for years.
Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning said in a statement:
“The fact that the U.N. Human Rights Council — which includes some of the worst abusers of human rights in the world that hate the U.S. — is cheering for this DOJ national takeover of the police should tell members everything they need to know. It’s time to support local police, not render them impotent via federal restrictions against maintaining law and order. No less than the very existence of local government is at stake.”
Any time the federal government attempts to get its grubby, bureaucratic hands on something Americans should be concerned.
This country needs to move away from big government intrusion and put control back into the hands of the people on the local and state level. Programs like this are a huge step in the wrong direction.
