Traditionally, after the Republican and Democratic national conventions are over, each official presidential nominee is deemed worthy to receive otherwise classified briefings from federal intelligence agencies.
In an unprecedented and historic move, however, a powerful Washington lawmaker is demanding that one of those nominees be blocked from accessing this sensitive material — and that’s just the beginning of her problems.
As the Conservative Tribune reports:
Thursday morning, House Speaker Paul Ryan Thursday formally requested that [Hillary Clinton,] the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee be denied classified information briefings, which are given to both nominees, because the FBI labeled her as “careless,” The Hill reported.
“As a former vice presidential nominee, I am keenly aware that Secretary Clinton is set to begin receiving classified intelligence briefings after the Democratic National Convention,” Ryan wrote. “Given the FBI’s findings, denying Secretary Clinton access to classified information certainly constitutes appropriate sanctions.”
In other bad news for Clinton, The Hill also reported that a bill had been introduced in the Senate to strip Clinton of her security clearance as punishment for what she did.
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn and Sen. Cory Gardner introduced the bill, explaining that it was appropriate given how Clinton had handled classified material in the past.
“When individuals mishandle our country’s most sensitive information they jeopardize national security and shouldn’t be trusted with such an important responsibility,” Cornyn explained in a statement.
“If the FBI won’t recommend action based on its findings, Congress will. At the very least, Secretary Clinton should not have access to classified information and our bill makes sure of it,” Gardner added in a separate statement.
All this as beleaguered FBI director James Comey prepares to testify before Congress, where he’ll be questioned about his decision to let Hillary Clinton go free with a slap on the wrist.
Clinton’s camp has probably gone from celebrating Comey’s decision to trying to deal with the fallout, which is surely greater than they could have anticipated.
