Presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his campaign had every reason to be gloating Wednesday morning. Not only had he trounced the opposition in the Indiana primary, but also the opinion of the entire Republican establishment seemed to shift overnight.
Now, Trump said, the same people who said “unbelievably horrible” things about him are practically knocking down his door to get involved.
Trump made the announcement during his appearance on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” the morning after his top rival, Sen. Ted Cruz, bowed out of the race. With only Ohio Gov. John Kasich remaining at that point (the establishment figure would end his moribund campaign later in the day), Trump was clearly the nominee.
And boy, were establishment figures and party functionaries everywhere eating crow almost as quickly as John Kasich eats a pancake.
“I’m getting calls from people that have said such terrible things about me, and now they want to join,” Trump told the “Fox & Friends” hosts.
