Secretary of State Bloomberg? It’s not unthinkable.
Former Mayor Mike Bloomberg wants to be Secretary of State in a Clinton administration, according to a batch of emails released Saturday by WikiLeaks.
Clinton adviser Neera Tanden asked former Bloomberg spokesman and Clinton ally Howard Wolfson in a June 3, 2015 email whether the former mayor was seriously considering a run for president and cited a New York Post column that revealed New York Democrats had approached Bloomberg to challenge her.
“I find the whole thing laughable,” responded Wolfson, who served as Clinton’s spokesman for her 2008 presidential run.
“Ok good I was worried you were losing it,” Tanden wrote back, before asking what Bloomberg would want to do in a Clinton administration.
Tanden floated an ambassadorship position to China but worried it might be “way too small” for the media magnate, the emails said.
Wolfson countered with a bigger title: Secretary of State, but mused that it “ain’t gonna happen.”
But Tanden forwarded the entire exchange to her boss, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta with the note, “Something to know for down the road.”
Bloomberg announced on March 7, 2016 he would not launch a presidential bid and Clinton called him that week, according to a March 11, 2016 email from Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
Bloomberg later gave a full-throated endorsement of Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in August.
