Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole has come out with an unexpected statement about Donald Trump that might surprise many of his supporters.
According to a news release issued on Trump’s website on Friday, the 1996 GOP presidential nominee has put his support behind the New York businessman.
“The voters of our country have turned out in record numbers to support Mr. Trump. It is important that their votes be honored and it is time that we support the party’s presumptive nominee, Donald J. Trump,” the statement read.
“I plan to attend the RNC convention in Cleveland to show my support for our party and our ticket, as I have done my entire life. We must unite as a party to defeat Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump is our party’s presumptive nominee and our best chance at taking back the White House this November.”

In the news release, Trump referred to Dole as a “wonderful man” and said it was a “great honor” to receive his endorsement.
The former senator’s support for Trump comes as something of a surprise. Throughout his political career, he was known as a well-known moderate/compromiser, and his endorsement runs counter to the argument that Trump is too extreme to win the presidency.
Dole has a point when it comes to conservatives sticking together to keep Clinton out of the White House. That being said, Trump still has a long way to go to win over many Republicans in Washington. Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush have declared they will not support Trump.
That being said, Dole’s endorsement adds to the Republican support Trump has picked up since he became the presumptive GOP nominee. That support includes Sen. John McCain, who reluctantly said he would support Trump.
Things are still looking bumpy for Trump, whose campaign has been fraught with controversy since day one.
