Just two weeks ago, President Obama fervently denied that the $400 million payment to Iran had anything to do with the release of the four American hostages. However, the State Department has just admitted that Obama lied.
The New York Post reported:
The State Department admitted Thursday that the US would not hand over $400 million in cash to Iran until it released four American hostages — two weeks after President Obama insisted the payment was not a “ransom.”
State Department spokesman John Kirby was asked at Thursday’s press briefing: “In basic English, you’re saying you wouldn’t give them $400 million in cash until the prisoners were released, correct?”
“That’s correct,” Kirby replied.
In a press conference on Aug. 4, Obama vehemently denied that the money was a ransom payment:
“We do not pay ransom. We didn’t here, and we won’t in the future,” Obama said. He added that families “know we have a policy that we don’t pay ransom. And the notion that we would somehow start now, in this high-profile way, and announce it to the world, even as we’re looking in the faces of other hostage families whose loved ones are being held hostage, and saying to them ‘We don’t pay ransom,’ defies logic.”
President Obama doth protest too much and he went even further when he chastised the press for daring to bring up the issue:
“It’s been interesting to watch this story surface. Some of you may recall, we announced these payments in January. Many months ago. There wasn’t a secret. We announced them to all of you. [Press secretary Josh Earnest] did a briefing on them. This wasn’t some nefarious deal. It wasn’t a secret. We were completely open with everybody about it and it is interesting to me how suddenly this became a story again.”
Apparently despite what came out of his own mouth, Kirby is still trying to claim that “the two negotiations were separate,” meaning that the hostage release and the arms deal were not connected, even though he just admitted they were.
Kirby was forced to address the issue after a piece in The Wall Street Journal outed the link between the $400 million and the release of the hostages.
The money may have been for the failed arms deal; however, as Kirby just admitted and WSJ confirmed, the two were linked. Obama tried to hide behind the fact that the money wasn’t specifically for the hostages, but the fact that the money was contingent on the release of the hostages means that is was absolutely a ransom.
It also means that Obama is proven once again to be a liar.
