At home in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Omar Mateen kept to himself and attended his mosque. In Orlando, the man who slaughtered 49 people Sunday was a regular at the gay bar he chose as the site for the massacre, according to new reports.
Sitora Yusify, Mateen’s first wife, said she knew about his former life.
“When we had gotten married, he confessed to me about his past — that was recent at that time — and that he very much enjoyed going to clubs and the nightlife,” she said. “So, I feel like it’s a side of him or a part of him that he lived but probably didn’t want everybody to know about.”
Speaking on a Brazilian TV station Monday, Marcio Dias, Yusify’s fiancé, said Yusify told him that Mateen had “gay tendencies.”
Jim Van Horn, a regular at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando that Mateen turned into a shooting gallery early Sunday, said Mateen frequented the club too. “He’s a homosexual and he was trying to pick up men,” he said.
Van Horn also said he spent one night speaking with Mateen at the bar, but was warned off by friends.
“They said they didn’t want me talking to him because he was a strange person,” said Van Horn.
Others had similar stories.
“I recognized him off Grindr,” Cord Cedeno told MSNBC Monday, adding that he later blocked Mateen on the gay hookup app because he was “creepy.”
Cedeno said Mateen had been at the gay club “several times. I know that for a fact.”
Kevin West said he had spoken with Mateen on a gay hookup app, and met him at around 1 a.m. Sunday outside the Pulse.
“He walked directly past me. I said, ‘Hey,’ and he turned and said, ‘Hey,’ and nodded his head,” West told the Los Angeles Times.
Seddique Mateen, the gunman’s father, posted on Facebook Monday that “homosexuals will be punished by God.”
