Donald Trump’s campaign went into free-fall on Friday night when an audio clip leaked in which he made lewd comments about women over eleven years ago. In the wake of the scandal, rumors circulated that the Republican National Committee had turned on Trump and withdrawn funding from the business mogul.
Now, RNC chair Reince Priebus has spoken out to put these rumors to rest.
“First of all, I want to make it very clear that the RNC is in full coordination with the Trump campaign, and we have a great relationship with them. If there’s any takeaway from this call, that’s the takeaway,” Priebus told RNC members during an emergency conference call, a recording of which was obtained by Politico.
“Nothing has changed in regard with our relationship and we remain very much involved and together in all levels of making these decisions with how to run this operation across this country,” Priebus added. “Everything is on course. I want you to understand that.”
This came after various top Republicans turned on Trump completely. John McCain withdrew his support entirely, and House Speaker Paul Ryan announced that he will no longer be defending Trump and will instead be focusing on protecting the majority in his congressional chamber.
Priebus spent most of his 14-minute call trying to defuse what he said were false “rumors” that the RNC would be shifting its focus to down-ballot races. He also dismissed rumors that staffers were leaving the RNC and Trump campaign and confirmed that there was no discussion of finding a new nominee.
“There’d been obviously in the last 24 hours, the last 36 hours, a lot of false rumors that we didn’t want to engage in before the debate last night, which was very important,” he said. “So here we are.”
