A Hillary Clinton supporter stirred the political waters Monday by posting a photo that appears to show Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders asleep during a Memorial Day ceremony at San Francisco’s Presidio.
“Attending the Memorial Day Ceremony honoring the over 1 million Americans who have lost their lives serving our country, and watching Bernie Sanders fall asleep during it. There is nothing I can really add here. #imwithher,” tweeted Zoe Dunning, a high-ranking member of the San Francisco Democratic Party who is also a veteran.
Sanders spoke at the event, and told those gathered he will work for veterans if elected.
“I’m the former chairman of the U.S. Senate committee on veterans affairs. I’m looking out for the needs of veterans the needs of those families, who made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
Reaction to the image was a mixed bag. Some thought it was just politics in the lead-up to the June 7 California primary.
“Zoe, thanx for your service. But I’m VFW and elected green (county council) and I still honor Bernie’s dedication to veterans rights. This is sheer artifice and a desperate attempt to disparage someone who has a stellar record of vets rights, nothing more to add here, #SMDFH,” Richard Stone replied to Dunning on Facebook.
Another Sanders supporter also defended the candidate. “I’ll let it go for today … Some see it as disrespectful, I do agree with them; however, if you’re old and exhausted like him it just happens. Especially with the sun beating down on you. Lastly how can you not resist a nap when no one is consistently bothering you,” wrote Mia Mason in her reply on Facebook
However, over in the Twittersphere, it was a cause for amusement.
