While presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has received the backing of several prominent Republicans, many so-called foreign policy “experts” in the Republican Party have yet to officially weigh in on the Trump campaign.
But now Donald Rumsfeld, former President George W. Bush’s first defense secretary, has broken ranks with some of his fellow foreign policy experts and stated that he will be voting for Trump in November, according to Politico.
Rumsfeld told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Wednesday evening that he “clearly” was going to vote for Trump, emphasizing that he “can’t imagine” why he wouldn’t vote for the presumptive nominee in November.
Rumsfeld also remarked that he could potentially see many supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders flocking to join the Trump crowd because the two candidates have some similarities.
“There is something happening that those two people could draw 25,000 human beings to hear them speak, and I think that we ought to give some credence to that and understand that that’s real,” he said.
The former defense secretary also ripped into the media for not accurately portraying Trump’s comments about NATO, and whether or not other countries should pay their fair share.
“I had a staff person go back and tell me precisely what (Trump) did say about NATO and then I compared it with what the media and his opponents are saying he said about NATO and there’s a difference,” he said.

There’s no real surprise there. It is completely unreasonable to expect the mainstream media to actually tell the truth about what Trump did, or did not, say.
Regardless of what the media might say about it, having the endorsement of Rumsfeld could be an big step toward Trump finally locking up support from the Republican establishment for good — an important step in keeping former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from enacting what would essentially be a third term for President Barack Obama.
