Some Trump supporters have made the comparison between The Donald and a superhero. After all, here’s a billionaire playboy who has decided to come to the rescue and vanquish the hordes of liberals holding the country hostage. What’s not to love?
As it turns out, Trump’s Tony Stark streak goes back a lot farther than just this election, though. Take this incident from November of 1991, where The Donald managed to save someone being beaten up in New York City while he was on his way to a concert.
According to the New York Daily News (via Philly.com), the incident occurred as Trump, his then-girlfriend Marla Maples and another couple were in a limo on their way to New Jersey.
The two were going to see a Paula Abdul concert (I know what you’re thinking — look, like you never had any Spin Doctors or C+C Music Factory albums? Don’t judge.) at the Meadowlands, when they spotted “a big guy with a big bat” mugging someone.
“Someone in the car looked over and said, ‘Gee, look at that, it’s a mugging,’” Trump said. “I said to my driver to stop the car because it was brutal-looking.”
“The guy with the bat looked at me, and I said, “Look, you’ve gotta stop this. Put down the bat,”‘ Trump said.
“I guess he recognized me because he said, ‘Mr. Trump, I didn’t do anything wrong.’ I said, ‘How could you not do anything wrong when you’re whacking a guy with a bat?’ Then he ran away.”
If you want to chalk it up to self-promotion, the writer noted that Trump didn’t want to talk about the incident when he was confronted with it.
“I’m not looking to play this thing up,” Trump had said. “I’m surprised you found out about it.”
However, there were a lot of witnesses to what happened, which ended up breaking the story wide open.
“All of a sudden, a big long limousine pulls up on an angle, and Donald Trump pops out with the blond, too,” an anonymous witness to the beating said. “There was a guy with a bat, hitting a guy over the head, and Trump yelled, ‘Put that bat down. What are you doing?’ The guy dropped the bat, came over and started talking to him.”
The witness also said that the criminal had gotten “five or six good whacks” with the bat on his victim before Trump interceded.
That sounds pretty superhero-ish to me. However, it was only saving one person. This November, Trump could well save the entire country from the machinations of Hillary Clinton.
