Liberals all around the country have been furious at presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for his proposed temporary ban on immigration from Muslim nations known to have ties to terrorism.
While his ban has been derided by the left, they forget that there’s one president even worse than Trump in this regard. In fact, according to The Daily Caller, he’s told certain classes of people no less than six times that they can’t enter the United States.
Who is this horrid president? Well, uh, Barack Obama.
Firstly, let’s look at the legality of what Trump (or for that matter, Obama) is doing. The power of presidents to exclude certain nationalities or sub-groups within those nationalities has been in effect since the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 (passed under a Democrat president and Democrat Congress, just in case you were wondering).
Section 212(f) states: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”
It’s pretty straightforward. So, how has President Barack Obama used it?
Well, for example, in July of 2011, he barred “anyone under a UN travel ban; anyone who violates any of 29 executive orders regarding transactions with terrorists, those who undermine the democratic process in specific countries, or transnational criminal organizations.”
Then, in April 2012, he banned those involved in “facilitating computer or network disruption that could assist in or enable serious human rights abuses by or on behalf of the government of Iran and Syria; anyone who have sold or provided goods, services, or technology to Iran or Syria likely to be used for such purposes; or to have materially assisted anyone whose property or interests are described.”
These aren’t necessarily bad things, although they could be used to exclude large groups of people, too. And it certainly makes Obama a hypocrite for Trump’s call for a wider ban to shut down terrorism.
In fact, the last six presidents have issued these orders — although George H.W. Bush only issued an order cancelling a previous order by Ronald Reagan.
By the way, look at what another Democrat president did. In 1980, during the Iranian hostage crisis, President Jimmy Carter issued an order cancelling “all visas issued to Iranian citizens for future entry into the United States” and saying that the U.S. “will not reissue visas, nor will we issue new visas, except for compelling and proven humanitarian reasons or where the national interest of our own country requires.”
This is exactly what Trump is proposing. It’s also what the Democrats don’t want you to know. They’ve done this too, and they refuse to take responsibility for it.
