Popular TV host and outspoken conservative Mike Rowe added a post to Facebook this weekend which has received a tremendous amount of feedback.
Rowe was flying to Baltimore when he learned of the massacre which took place in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday morning.
Rowe said that he was watching the scene unfold on the television in the back of the seat in front of him, he noticed a small boy sitting beside him. The child was looking at the screen and, according to Rowe, “trying to wrap his head around what’s happened.”
The child recognized Rowe from television, so Rowe suspects the child felt comfortable asking him questions about the situation in Orlando.
Drawing on past experiences, Rowe turned to the little boy and quoted the one thing that always comes to his mind when this type of situation arises — the advice he received when he was young from another TV star, Mr. Rogers.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,” Rogers said, “my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
Rowe went on to say, “Orlando, and the rest of us, need all the helpers we can get. Godspeed.”
Rowe’s post has received numerous comments, many thanking him for his response and his ability to put into words what others are thinking.
One person commented: “Thank you for quoting Mr. Rogers. We need more people like him around these days.”
Another responded, saying, “Mike, I am just an ordinary guy, much like you try to tell us that you are yourself. But I think the big difference is your ability to put into words what the rest of us can only feel inside. Thank you.”
