People magazine reported Tuesday that first lady Michelle Obama traveled to Africa Monday with her mother and two daughters, Sasha and Malia. When asked about the trip, the first lady jokingly said, “I’m traveling with my mother and my two daughters. This is the special girl-power unit of the Obama household. We left the president behind because he’s a boy.”
She went on to say the reason for the trip, which will include Morocco and Liberia, is to promote the Let Girls Learn initiative. The goal of the initiative is to assist young girls in obtaining a quality education. The first lady also met with several Liberian government officials prior to her meeting with President Ellen Josnson Sirleaf.
During her visit, Obama made sure the girls in attendance understood the importance of receiving a good education. She told the young girls, “I want you to keep fighting and stay in school. I’m here to shine a big, bright light on you.”
