Every American should know the details of what happened on September 11, 2001. A group of Muslim terrorists hijacked four airplanes with the plan of crashing them into buildings across the country. Two planes crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. A third airplane crashed into the Pentagon. And the fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back. Almost 3,000 people died that day.
These are the facts. These are the indisputable facts of what happened on September 11. And yet, there are some people who want to hide the truth.
The town of Owego, New York recently unveiled a memorial to 9/11. And for some insane reason, Muslims have decided to protest the memorial, angry that one portion of the plaque says that the attack was carried out by “19 Islamic terrorists”.
According to the Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier, Muslims might face backlash because of the memorial’s accurate depiction of who is responsible for the terrorist attacks on 9/11. They would prefer that the memorial either said “terrorists” or “al-Qaeda terrorists”, but not Muslim. And while wrong, it’s understandable. It must be difficult to grapple with the fact that the religion you practice encourages such atrocities to take place.
However, instead of using this memorial as a way to condemn Islamic terrorism, or to stand in solidarity with their fellow Americans and express their sympathy and support, they are making it all about them and their hurt feelings.
Donald Castellucci, the town supervisor, slammed the protesters. “I don’t live in a politically-correct world. I live in a historical fact world and cross terrorism, whether it’s American homegrown, Christianity, Islamic, you call it what it is,” he said. He further added that Owego “doesn’t whitewash things,” and defended the memorial, saying it was an accurate representation of what happened on 9/11 and who was responsible for it.
People don’t deny that the horrible people from Westboro Baptist Church are Christians. Just because a truth may be ugly doesn’t make it any less true. And if Muslims want to not be associated with terrorism, then they have to stop running away from Muslim involvement in terrorism and face it. They need to take the responsibility of changing the reputation of Islam onto themselves, and stop blaming everyone else for it. Getting angry because a memorial accurately portrayed a terrorist attack doesn’t help anyone, including Muslims in America. It’s about time they accepted that.
