President Barack Obama has has completely and utterly failed as a president when it comes to illegal immigration. Obama has done nothing to secure our border, and under his administration illegal immigration into the United States has surged.
According the The Daily Caller, a new report has surfaced showing that not only has Obama been refusing to deport those who cross the border illegally, he has only deported a small fraction of those who have overstayed their visas.
Living in the United States with a visa does not make you an illegal immigrant. However, once you overstay your visa, you are breaking the law, and are here illegally.
During the 2015 fiscal year from Oct. 1, 2014, to Sept. 30, 2015, 482,781 visitors to the United States overstayed their visas, but only 2,456 of them were deported, according to figures prepared by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the Senate Judiciary Committee.
That’s less than 1 percent.
If these people had wanted to remain in American under the law, there are a number of legal avenues they could have taken to remain. However simply refusing to obey the law is no way to start off a new life in America.
As it turns out, the number of deportations for visa-violators has plummeted during the Obama administration. In the 2009 fiscal year, 12,538 people were deported, according to The Daily Caller.
The numbers have fallen every year since then. In fiscal year 2014, only 3,564 people were deported, but even that was more than the number departed in the last fiscal year.
I shudder to think of what the numbers for 2016 will look like.
This is no way to run a country. We are a nation of laws, and people need to respect those laws. Clearly the government knows these people are overstaying their visas, so it shouldn’t be that hard to deport them.
The United States will always welcome immigrants. However, there are processes that need to be followed. New Americans are welcome — as long as they enter legally.
