Migrants are starting to surge across the U.S.-Mexico border again, after a short lull – and the Obama Administration is determined to take all comers.
Just five months before he leaves office, Barack Obama is expanding its refugee processing system for families from Central American countries like Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador in preparation for the surge.
Since the start of this year, more than 51,000 illegal aliens traveling as families have been apprehended coming across the border – 43,000 of them children. Remember, this is only the number of aliens caught, not the number who actially make it across the border.
Back in 2014, the Obama Administration launched the effort to let unaccompanied alien children stay in the U.S. permanently. There are now 2,884 kids approved for the program and almost 10,000 with pending applications, The Blaze is reporting.
Under the program, once here, the children would be allowed to bring with them their parents, caregivers, unmarried siblings and other close relatives.
Current efforts to handle the influx of illegal immigrants – and settle them in the U.S. rather than deport them – are not keeping up with demand.
Obama’s Deputy Homeland Security Advisor Amy Pope said refugee programs in Central America are being expanded because “current efforts to date haven’t been sufficient.” The new programs, she said, are designed to help “promote safe and orderly immigration and border security.”
Pope said it is unclear how many families and children may benefit from the enhanced programs but officials expect requests for help to steadily increase as the programs get underway in the coming months.
Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that the United States has reached an agreement with Costa Rica in which that nation will start accepting refugees from its neighbors who will eventually move to America.
“The goal is for individuals who have legitimate humanitarian claims not to take the perilous journey and to really accept our outstretched arm of relief and proceed with those claims in a safe and orderly way,” he said.
If the Obama Administration is going to start letting in every relative of an illegal alien granted permission to stay here, that could triple or quadruple the number of aliens crossing the border.
All of this is contrary to what the Obama Administration said they were doing just a year ago. They told everyone that they were going to try and discourage Central American immigrants from making the dangerous trek through Mexico to the United States.
It turns out that was all a lie.
