Building a border wall and stemming the tide of illegal immigration are perhaps the biggest components of the success seen thus far by the presidential campaign of billionaire businessman Donald Trump.
Trump promised not only to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, but has vowed to make Mexico pay for it as well, earning rebukes from some, particularly former Mexican President Vicente Fox, who infamously quipped, “I’m not paying for that f***ing wall.”
During a recent appearance on Fox News with host Bill O’Reilly, Trump was asked if he had a message he wanted to deliver to the former Mexican leader.
Trump replied, “Yeah. Get your money ready because you’re going to pay for the wall.”
O’Reilly pressed, “You’re not backing off then, right?”
“No, of course not. Look, we lose a fortune with Mexico, the trade deficit, we lose $58 billion a year. The wall is going to cost 10, believe me, they can afford it,” Trump said.
“And we’re going to end up having a very good relationship with Mexico, but right now, sadly, like everybody else, they’re taking advantage of our country, on trade and at the border,” he added. “So, we’ll get it straightened out.”
Donald Trump has stated repeatedly that he will build a wall and that the effort will be funded by Mexico, at least indirectly. He has even offered up a few options for how that could be done.
Whether that funding comes via a direct check from Mexico, adjustments within the trade deficit, or through fees imposed on those wiring money from the U.S. to Mexico, there are a variety of methods Trump could use to fund his wall project.
Regardless, Mexico should know that Trump is serious and go ahead and get their money ready, as he will figure out one way or another to make them pay.
