REPORTS: Military Coup Unfolding In Turkey

A military coup is currently unfolding in the nation of Turkey.

Reuters is reporting that the Turkish military claims it has seized power:

According to ABC News, the military is claiming it did this “to reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated.”

Reports of a coup by the Turkish military began earlier on Friday with news that the military had blocked Istanbul’s Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridges–the main bridges in the city–and gunfire having been heard in the capitol city of Ankara.

Turkey’s Prime Minster Binali Yildirim is not calling the current situation a coup, but has reportedly said that “part of the military” is engaged in an “illegal attempt” to seize power. Turkey’s president Recep Erdogan is reportedly out of the country on holiday.

There is currently a social media blackout in Turkey, with Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube having been blocked:
