The Republican race for the Presidency may have begun as a civil endeavor, but is quickly devolving into a street fight with multiple allegations of dirty tactics being used to “steal” votes.
Trey Gowdy, a Marco Rubio supporter, just accused Ted Cruz of creating a fake Facebook page to trick voters into thinking he had pulled his endorsement of the Florida Senator.
“Its been reported that a fake Facebook page has been used to fool South Carolinians into thinking that I no longer support Marco Rubio and that I’m instead supporting Ted Cruz. Nothing could be further from the truth and I’m demanding that Senator Cruz and his campaign repudiate these dishonest and underhanded tactics,” Gowdy said in a release by the Rubio campaign.
Gowdy went on to claim Ted Cruz might not “place the same value on waging a contest based on the truth and facts” as he and Rubio do. The South Carolina Senator also alleged Cruz and his “allies” have been part of a “systematic effort” to spread lies and false information to get votes.
The Gowdy accusations of Cruz or his cohorts being behind the fake Facebook page is more than a bit disappointing.
I mean, how many times can Cruz claim he simply did not know about something or just claim ignorance? This is a disturbing pattern that is happening time and time again.
Some endorsements mean more than others, and I believe Gowdy’s is one of those. This was an endorsement that shook a lot of conservatives, including myself, that have been very disappointed in the conduct of Senator Cruz.
Ted Cruz may have been the likely, or even easy, target after the Ben Carson incident in Iowa. Gowdy is usually such a pragmatic and principled man, it seems more than a bit odd he would publicly accuse anyone of a dirty deed without having more than a hunch to back up his allegations.
Maybe Marco Rubio is getting nervous he will not come out of South Carolina being the darling of the Republican establishment. The revelations that surfaced about his donor list earlier today definitely will not score him any points with voters who feel strongly illegal immigration must end.
