Donald Trump remained noticeably silent on Tuesday following the Supreme Court’s decision to throw out a Texas law regulating abortion clinics. The presidential candidate, who describes himself as pro-life, did not comment publicly or even send out one of his ubiquitous tweets. The ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt is considered the most consequential ruling on abortion in over a decade.
The Court, in a 5-3 decision, struck down a 2013 Texas law, which required abortion clinics to meet hospital safety standards and for abortion doctors to have admitting privileges within 30 miles of the facilities.
Trump told a group of more than 1,000 evangelical leaders, who came at his invitation to New York City last week, that he will appoint only pro-life judges to the Supreme Court. He has stated that he shares President Reagan’s view on abortion: he is pro-life with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.
