After receiving a surprise endorsement from former rival and presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Friday, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump picked up another key endorsement ahead of Monday’s highly anticipated first debate from the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Council—the official union representing some 5,000 federal immigration officers and law enforcement support staff.
The formal endorsement from the National ICE Council is the first ever issued by the group and was decided via an internal vote in which Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton received just 5 percent of the vote.
In the press release announcing the endorsement, Chris Crane, president of the National ICE Council, explained that while Clinton and President Barack Obama have never attempted to connect with him or his union members, Trump has sat down personally with union leadership to “discuss his goals for enforcement” and pledge “to support ICE officers.”
Additionally, Crane and the council are hopeful Trump’s immigration proposals will restore security and provide much needed support for border control agents. Meanwhile, the group believes Clinton’s immigration proposals are the “most radical” in United States history and would “result in the loss of thousands of innocent American lives, mass victimization and death for many attempting to immigrate to the United States, the total gutting of interior enforcement, the handcuffing of ICE officers, and an uncontrollable flood of illegal immigrants across U.S. borders.”
“America has been lied to about every aspect of immigration in the United States,” the press release concludes. “We can fix our broken immigration system, and we can do it in a way that honors America’s legacy as a land of immigrants, but Donald Trump is the only candidate who is willing to put politics aside so that we can achieve that goal. We hereby endorse Donald J. Trump, and urge all Americans, especially the millions of lawful immigrants living within our country, to support Donald J. Trump, and to protect American jobs, wages and lives.”
