In testimony before the Senate last December, FBI Director James Comey said that President Barack Obama’s plan to deny weapon sales to every person on the FBI terror watch list was superfluous, inasmuch as the FBI already has the power to halt every firearm sale for those on the list.
Comey made that statement during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee after the San Bernardino attacks. According to CNS News, he was responding to a claim made by Obama after the attacks.
“And for those who are concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a no-fly list where people can’t get on planes, but those same people who we don’t allow to fly could go into a store right now in the United States and buy a firearm, and there’s nothing that we can do to stop them,” Obama said. “That’s a law that needs to be changed.”
Sen. Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, challenged the FBI director on this.
“Last week, our president stated that there are individuals who can’t get on planes, but they can go to a gun shop and buy a firearm there and he said ‘nothing we can do to stop them,’” Sen. Grassley said at the Dec. 9 FBI oversight hearing.
“But — and correct me if I’m wrong — the FBI is notified when someone on the terrorist watch list attempts to purchase a firearm, and a NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) check is requested, and the FBI has multiple avenues that they can pursue,” Grassley said at the committee’s hearing on the oversight of the FBI.
“Mr. Chairman, you’re right,” Director Comey responded. “There are a variety of things that we do when we are notified that someone on our known or suspected terrorist database is attempting to buy a firearm.
“The FBI is alerted when that is triggered, and then we do investigation, understand, are there disqualifiers that we’re aware of that could stop the transactions, and if the transaction goes through, the agents who are assigned to that case, to that subject are alerted to it so they can investigate,” Comey added.
Comey also said that they might not want to tip a suspect off to the fact that they were being investigated.
“It’s a little bit challenging for us because ‘known’ or ‘suspected’ means it hasn’t been adjudicated in every case that somebody is a terrorist,” Director Comey told Sen. Dianne Feinstein, according to The Washington Times. “It’s somebody we’re investigating, so we don’t want to, obviously, blow our investigation.”
This is radically different from the picture that Barack Obama and the liberals are painting for America — that, without new gun control laws, there would be no way to stop terror suspects from getting guns.
That ability already exists, which makes one wonder why we’re not focusing on stopping terrorism instead.
Oh, wait, that’s right — it’s not part of the liberal agenda. I’d forgotten that, to the left, tragedies are little more than an excuse to take away our liberties.
