Actor Morgan Freeman caused quite the controversy when he appeared on 60 Minutes recently, and discussed his thoughts on Black History Month, calling it “ridiculous.”
“You’re going to relegate my history to a month?” Freeman asked of Mike Wallace. “What do you do with yours? Which month is white history month? No, come on, tell me?”
“Well I’m Jewish,” responded Wallace.
“Okay. Which month is Jewish history month?” Freeman asked.
Wallace responded with the obvious: there isn’t one, and he doesn’t particularly want one either.
“I don’t either,” Freeman argued. “I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history.”
Sensing a deeper issue in the conversation, Wallace asked Freeman about how he proposes we eliminate racism from society.
“Stop talking about it. I’m going to stop calling you a white man, and I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man,” Freeman concluded. “I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman…you know what I’m saying?”
