It didn’t take long for the left to use Sunday’s attack on an Orlando nightclub to launch a full-court press against so-called assault weapons. Over the past 48 hours numbers people, including presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, have called for a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1994.
Democratic Florida Congressman Alan Grayson recently added his voice to the chorus of those demanding more strict gun control laws during a recent interview on CNN. In doing so, he also made what is, in all likelihood, one of the most ridiculous claims in the history of gun control advocacy.
“If [Omar Mateen] was not able to buy a weapon that shoots off 700 rounds in a minute, a lot of those people would still be alive,” Grayson told CNN’s Erin Burnett. “If someone like him had nothing worse to deal with than a Glock pistol, which was his other weapon today, he might have killed three or four people and not 50.”
Wow. Firearms illiteracy is to be expected from the left, but this one takes the cake.
First off the gunman didn’t use an AR-15 as originally reported. According to Bearing Arms, the weapon used in the Orlando terror attack was a Sig Sauer MCX carbine, which they describe as “a modular, multi-caliber (able to swap to different calibers, including 5.56 NATO, 300 BLK, and 7.62×39) rifle system that sometimes utilizes STANAG magazines common to more than 60 different firearms, but otherwise has no major parts that interface with AR-15s in any way, shape or form.”
Second, the claim that this weapon can fire off 700 rounds a minute is pure fantasy. The rate of fire of a semi-automatic weapon is completely dependent upon how fast the user can pull the trigger and change the magazine. At that rate, a shooter would have to pull the trigger 11.6 times per second.
Finally, the idea that a so-called “assault weapon” is unique in its ability to cause mass casualties ignores recent history. Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University campus using two pistols, one of which was a Glock 19, the very weapon that Congressman Grayson claims couldn’t kill more than three or four people.
