Presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump surprised the world (yet again) on Monday when his campaign announced that Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s campaign manager, was being let go.
Trump’s daughter may have had a key role in the decision to fire Lewandowski. Ever since Lewandowski became embroiled in a scandal involving Michelle Fields, a journalist who at the time worked for Breitbart News, Ivanka Trump reportedly hasn’t been a fan of Lewandowski.
The straw that finally broke her back may have been a report that Lewandowski had attempted to plant negative stories in the press about Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump’s husband, because Lewandowski and Kushner don’t get along, CNN reported.
Trump reportedly sat down with her father on Monday morning and essentially told him that either Lewandowski went, or she did. Ultimately, The Donald decided to stick with his family.
Many have seen this firing has a sign that the Trump campaign has finally begun taking the general election seriously and attempting to morph into what it needs to be to take on the Clinton machine.
Trump has been embroiled in controversy after controversy in recent weeks and recent polling has shown him trailing presumed Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Trump may have finally realized that he needs a more experienced person to lead his campaign against the political veteran.
Despite being let go, Lewandowski stated that he still supports Trump.
“I had a nice conversation with Mr. Trump and I said to him, ‘It’s been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this,’ and I mean that from the bottom of my heart,” Lewandowski told CNN after he was fired.
If Donald Trump is preparing to pivot his campaign to a general election mindset, this could be his first step on the long road to defeating Clinton. Trump can’t afford to make mistakes against Clinton, especially when the future of the country is at stake.
